Engine Mechanical problem

I have engine oil leak. i could see the oil leak in the timing gear cover.i don't know if this is serious issue. the mechanic charges $1000 for replacing the seal. i am not ready to spend this much , for i bought the car just 3 months ago for $7400. can i not just kp refilling the engine oil without having to change the seal. please advice. My mechanic says , this could create major problem if not fixed immed.
