2001 Nissan Sentra Can't turn ignition key easily

Steering problem
2001 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Very difficult to get ignition key to turn without rapid turning of steering wheel to the left while trying to turn ignition key. Eventually works after several tries. Is worsening. Is this an ignition lock or steering column problem?
