2001 Mercury Sable Why would my car run but not go into gea

Transmission problem
2001 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 116000 miles

I was driving my 2001 Mercury Sable home from the store. I pulled onto my street & pushed the gas but the car wouldn't go. The car was in drive & just wouldn't go. The engine sounds great everything else is fine it just won't go. What do you think the problem is with this. I see a black computer thype modual where the shifter is could this be the problem? & if so what is that part called?
