Engine Cooling problem
2001 GMC Sierra V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 68000 miles

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup. 4X4 8 cylinder. Approximately every 1000 miles the "low coolant" light will come on. I usually have to add about a half gallon of fluid. I see no fluid in the passenger floorboard, the oil seems to be fine (no milky look or bubbles). Occasionally I do see a small amount of liquid on the ground just behind and to the inside of the passenger side wheel well after parking the truck. What can this be?
