Engine Performance problem

Hi,
I have a question about my 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 engine. It runs well until I hit 3,000 RPM and then it seems like the rev limiter cuts the ignition out. It does'nt go any higher than 3,000 RPM and the guage stops right at 3,000 every time I rev it!
