Air Conditioning problem
2001 Ford Explorer V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My grand son is in Miami Flordia, knows nothing about auto repairs. He has a 2001 Ford Explorer. The AC stopped functioning properly and he took it to a repair shop and was told that he needed an evaporater core which would cost him $640.00 for parts alone, labor not included. Since this sounded excessive to me, my question is "What should be the approximate cost for replacing an AC evaporater core on a 2001 Ford Explorer.
