Air Conditioning problem

I live in Arizona, the A/C stopped blowing cold air while we were driving. then when we stopped at a light there was a funny burning smell and smoke. The engine did not heat up and it idles and runs fine. There is now some fluid leaking on the side the compressor is located, and there is a rattling/loose sound when the car idles. No more smoke after the initial time. The A/C blows hot air. What could this be?
