2001 Ford Escape 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 70000 miles

My brakes work fine. There seems to be a hissing sound, however, that is getting more noticable. It seems to stop making the sound when I touch the brakes to stop or slow the vehicle. The sound seems to come from the area in front of the brake pedal. When I turn off the vehicle, the hissing continues for a short while and then fades away. Could this be a vacuum leak? How di I locate it? Thanks.
