2001 Chevy Malibu Rack and Pinion Replacement

Suspension problem
2001 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 34000 miles

I need to have my Rack and Pinion replaced. I have found rebuilt ones on the net for $250ish. My mechanic is quoting $750.00 for total job. Does this sound about right? He is a general mechanic, should I look at a suspension shop? Thank you.
