Engine problem
2001 Audi TT Question 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Manual 86600 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
The oil light came on in the car today so I put oil in it. Once that was done and I started driving again there was a ticking sound coming from under the hood. The oil light is still on also.

The 1st thing that needs to be done here is check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. This will determine if the oil pump is doing its job-Bear in mind its making noise at this time-could be the oil pump or internal defects such as engine bearings/oil galleries/ clogged pick up screen due to sludge-check the pressure and comeback with the readings and we'll take it one step at a time.

You need an oil pressure gauge-find the oil pressure sending unit remove it hook up the gauge to it and read off the pressure and comeback with reading so I can evaluate the situation whether its the oil sender/idiot gauge or internal defects.

Read the pressure at idle and then jack up the rpm to 2,000 rpms and read again. then report back to me.

I know this may sound stupid, but I have been looking at Oil pressure gauges online and most that I have seen say automatic transmission. Are there special ones for the manual transmission?

Okay this is what we have done. I spoke with my dad and he thought that maybe too much oil was put into the car. So today we drained the oil, put a new filter on it, and put in 5W 30 synthetic oil. This resolved the oil light situation and the ticking, but added new problems. The car is now blowing white smoke and whistling when the gas is pushed. Not sure what is going on.

Thanks for the last posting. I did get what I needed, havesn't used it yet as the original problem seems to be solved. just new ones now.

Where is this white smoke/whistling coming from-sounds like an overheating problem.

The whistling sound is coming from under the hood and the white smoke is coming out of the exhaust pipes. The oil light does come back on after it runs for a while. My boyfriend is concerned that it is the turbo, could that be the problem.
