2000 Toyota Avalon 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 78000 miles

On our 2000 Toyota Avalon, 78K miles, the engine light came on. Repair shop says what caused it is that the "carbon filter" has gone bad and they need to replace it. This filter they said filters out fumes in the engines. Not a cheap repair quote..$850. I've never even heard of a carbon filter before!
