Engine Cooling problem

Hello,

I am on my second Saturn SL2 and have to frequently add oil. Well, I forgot this time and on the way into work today, the car began making horrible noises and cut off on me.

I walked to a nearby gas station and bought 5 quarts of oil, 4 of which I put into the car. I let it sit there a while and then I tried to crank it. It started and I let it run for a few minutes and hopped my way into work, which was about 2 miles from where it died (cut off) on me.

I have since cut the car off and am letting it sit. My question is this...should I be letting the car run and thereby letting the new oil try to circulate or should I leave it be for a certain length of time and then try to start it?

When I cut it off, it was still making pretty bad noises/banging.
