What is purpose of EGR Valve.
Someone said it needed replacing and what is the extinct of replacing this part.

Hi Diane!
I had the EGR valve for my 2000 Silouette van changed last week and asked the SAME question. "What is THAT?" This valve apparently regulates the amount of air that is mixed with the gasoline for emissions. My shop visit was originally for a non-operating Air Conditioner, plus the service engine light periodically came on (due to the EGR). The EGR unit was $100, and my mechanic, who is pretty honest, said it was something I really should get to prevent any other issues.

The van had been "knocking" when I first started it up and it seems its not doing that any more.

Now if I can just get the air conditioning working!
