Engine Performance problem
2000 Nissan Xterra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 141000 miles

yesterday i went down a dirt road and then it started skipping and trying to die on me i had to put it in neutral and rev the engine at a stoplight just to get it home inever had aproblem until then i called a mechanic and they said that it would very hard to detect even on a machine so i would appreciate any feedback.thanks
