Air Conditioning problem

My Air Conditioner works inconsistently. Whenever I turn on the Air Conditioner , it takes a while to cool up. Once it cools , it works for a minute or two. Sometimes more, And then it doesn't work. Other times, it cools for a while , but never consistently and without interruptions.

Can you please tell me what is the problem? What do I need to fix , so that when I seek a mechanic to fix it, I know they aren't lying to me or telling me other stuff ? Finally, what would you say is the price range that this problem costs for repair.
