2000 Mitsubishi Montero 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 135000 miles

i went to to change out the altimator and battery a few months ago, when i pick up the car it started fine and held the rev but as i droved off, and got to a stop sign and stop it shot off and wouldnt hold the rev i have to drive with both foot, i couldnt take my foot off the gas or it would shot off. after a few miles the rev came up n i could take my foot off the gas at a stop. i took the terminal off the battery yesterday and im havein the same problem. what could it be? HELP..
