Engine Performance problem

I actually have a couple of questions about my vehicle. It just started doing these things all at one time. When i crank it up and put it in gear the rpm's go below 500 and when I drive a mile or two and put it in park the rpm's while rise to 1,500 but as soon as I put it in gear, the rpm's agian drop below 500. And while it is idleing the temperature will rise and start to run hot. Right before it started doing this I put a quart of oil in it and put water in the cooling container and in the radiator, then took it on a 200 mile trip. I don't know if that could have anything to do with my problem. Maybe your company can help find out whats wrong, because i have to take another 200 mile trip in 3 days and I would really want it to be fixed. Thanks
