2000 Ford Taurus won't go into gear

Transmission problem
2000 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 190000 miles

when I start my car I can't put my car in gear. however if I just turn it on I can put it in nuetral, start the car, and then I have no problems. I have no problems starting it, the transmition is not slipping, it just won't go in gear if it's running. what could the problem be

Did you ever get any good advice on the problem? I'm having the same trouble with a 98 taurus.
