Computer problem
2001 BMW 525 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 95000 miles

codes, then self resets and doesn't code for 100 miles or so, then codes again. Just started this cycle about 2 weeks ago. Car is excellent condition and has had all maintenance done per book or better by dealer for its entire life. I tried running reg. gas in it recently. could this be the cause? Other causes? Repair options? Is this a threat to reliability etc.?

The cam position sensor the car is setting the fault for will have to be replaced, is it the intake cam or the exhaust cam that it is setting the fault for?

I don't know if code is for intake or exhaust. Got it read by my mechanic, who is not a BMW specialist and won't attempt the repair. He said 'take it to the Dealer or a BMW specialist". Car seems to be running perfect and code light is not staying on. Do you know if this fault can cause engine damage or failure? If not, I'll probably just run with it for a while and see if anything happens/it stops coding etc.

Your issue is due to a plausibility fault and will not adversely affect the running of the car or damage anything. You could ignore the problem for now if you wish, however I would replace the defective sensor(s) and reset the check engine light so I don't have to be bothered by it. The code you reported does not tell me which one has failed and it has been my experience that the exhaust and intake cam sensors both fail with similar regularity, they are not terribly difficult to replace and only cost about 90 dollars each. If you can distinguish which one is bad, repost and and I will take you through the steps to replace it.
