Transmission problem
1994 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 186000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
A few month's ago trans starting making wierd noises and an occasional puff of smoke from exhaust. Checked and added trans. fluid. A week later trans. would slip and not engage until warm. Checked fluid to be below dip stick. Replaced trans filter and fluid. Finally realized I had a bad vacuum modulator. Replaced with a Motorcraft (Ford OEM) modulator.
No longer burn trans oil but now the transmission slips between gears.
When modulator was letting fluid into the vacuum system it shifted fine, as long as trans fluid level was sat.
Slipping has occured since replacement of the modulator.
Vacuum under idle is approx. 16" wg.
