Electrical problem

While out shopping, I couldn't get my keyless opener to open my car door. Bought new battery, reset 7 seconds as directed, and still could not open door. Had locksmith come and open door...Car cranked normally and I drove home...about an hour later I tried to start the car and it wouldn't start. I had it on a battery charger and it wouldn't start, tried to get it jumped off and nothing. Had the battery posts and cables cleaned and all connections checked...Every thing seems fine. Also, the lights work and windows roll down. What could be causing this problem? Are the two things connected in any way or just a coincidence.
