Engine Performance problem
2000 BMW X5 V8 All Wheel Drive Automatic 97000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

I recently replaced the MAF sensor, but instead
of buying one for this car model I used one for
Range Rover 2008 model, which is supposed to
have the same M62 engine.

The car is running fine, but it is not very smooth
at low speeds. I was wondering if it could be due
to this MAF sensor. Do you think there is any
difference the MAF sensors of Range Rover M62
and BMW X5 2000 M62?

Thanks.

More than likely it is the exact same part but I am left wondering what the rationale behind replacement of the MAF sensor was, did the unit require replacement? Has the PCV valve ever been replaced? Has the profile gasket for the throttle plate ever been replaced? Has the DME software ever been updated? Was the check engine light on? Have you scanned for additive and multiplicative values for fuel trim? These are my concerns, thank you for indulging me. ♥

I should have given some context. The Service Engine
Soon light had been on a while. My local mechanic
was not able to pin point the parts causing it. So I
took it to the dealer (Mountain View BMW, Bay
Area, California). He asked me to have O2 sensor,
MAF sensor, and the gas cap replaced. I only had
them O2 sensor replaced. Sometimes on-board
computer gets confused. However, the light came
back. I checked with my Actron unit and it showed
P0170 and P0173. That's when I replaced the MAF.
I have already driven about 60 miles and the light
has not come back, but sometimes when I am about
to stop the vehicle I feel a sudden "push" and have
to brake harder.

For all other questions you have mentioned I would
say no - I don't think any of that has been done.
I do, however, know there is a leak in valve cover gasket.

I am not sure if my Actron PocketScan Plus can do
the scanning for additive and multiplicative values for fuel trim.

Thanks for your response. I feel part of the X5
community!

ajitverma,
So what is the verdict. I have the same problem with my 00 X5 4.4

Did the MAF solve the problem?

Where did you buy the MAF? I have heard of a string of brand new ones being faulty.

Thanks

I replaced it with Range Rover part, reset the code,
and it has been running great ever since.

Got mine from http://www.autohausaz.com.

I hope it helps.
