1999 Volkswagen Jetta engine cuts out

Engine Performance problem
1999 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 60,000 miles

Engine cuts out. Very erratic. May go 200 miles or 10 miles. Usually have to wait about 20 minutes before it will start. Turns over ok, but won't start. plugs and wires have been changed.

I would suspect the coil / crank sensor
need to check for spark (after stalling )
also scan for codes
any lean condition codes suspect MAF sensor
