My car headlights and taillights do not always go out when I shut the door and leave the car. I have to open the door and shut it again once or twice or turn the light switch to off from automatic.

One of the door switch is defective. Figure out which one and replace (Hint: which door do you always have to slam twice to turn the lights off?). That should solve the problem.
