Noises problem

I went to pick my mom up from work last night, and just before I got there, or half way there, the engine started ticking. At higher RPM's the engine would tick, and it wouldn't accelerate as you think it would .. It goes 'slower' at acceleration, and I dont know what the problem is now.. Should I drive it or leave it parked? How much would it cost to repair!?
