Engine Performance problem

My Montero smokes at traffic lights on takeoff, uses a lot of oil, and the gas mileage has dropped dramatically.
I've heard that the valve seals need to be replaced.
Is there a free site ont the internet that shows/describes how to do this?
Is it a different problem
