Brakes problem

My first time replacing brake pads....Front brakes went well. On the rear, I could not get the caliper back down over the width of the new pads. I purchased the pads at the auto parts store, had the middle aged, experienced guy determine the right set for my make/model. I was able to push the brake piston back, but the difference between the rear caliper and front caliper was the bolt assembly. The rear had a metal spool in which the bolt went through to fasten the caliper back in place. This metal spool was about 3/8 of an inch from sliding back to it's proper spot. I was able to replace the most worn pad, but still have one of the original pads to allow the bolt assembly back in place. Any thoughts?
