Electrical problem
1999 Hyundai Sonata 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 85000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I just had a rebuilt alt installed by mechanic. The car never made it home that night. No idiot light, no charge. Night drive depleted battery. Mech on 2 week vacation and I need the car. Am doing troubleshooting today after battery charge. At startup alt output at 14.2v at battery,OK, after 2min of idle voltage drops to battery voltage 12.2v, no charge. Diodes in fuse box check OK. All fuses check OK. Where do I look? I decided to remove alt and take in for a test. Everything is loose, and disconnected. HOW DO I GET IT OUT?

This info comes from Mitchell, normally they get it from the manufacturer, if the info in the manual is wrong, the best I can do is ask you to post a clear picture I can look at to help figure it out.

I gave up trying to remove the alt. Looks like after the CV shaft is removed, the cross member needs to drop a few inches. Too much for me. What about trouble shooting the intermittent charge, does this model 1999 V6 Sonata have an external regulator, how can I analyze intermittent charging. With fully charged battery the alt output is 14.2v for 8 minutes the 12.6(battery), then after a few minutes it may begin to charge. If I turn on loads, lights fan AC, it drops to 12.6v and never comes back even if the loads are turned off. Challenging.

If crank pulley is equipped with dynamic damper, check if it is faulty.

If the dampers are detached and freewheeling on the main pulley, the belting would be running at a much lower rpm thus lower/no charging rate.
