1999 Honda Odyssey Sudden Engine Shutdown

Engine Performance problem
1999 Honda Odyssey 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 155000 miles

My Odyssey has had several episodes of sudden unexplained shutdowns, with engine, steering and electrical systems involved and stopping in an instant. Seems to happen most often at low speed. Engine will restart after a few minutes.

Hi Squidley,

If it was difficult to start immediately after stalling, I would recommend replacing the main relay.

Was there any check engine light showing prior to engine stalling?

The check engine light did come on, but I don't know if it happened just before OR just after the shutdown, since my eyes were off the instrument panel at the time.

Hi Squidley,

If you are not sure, get a scan done to see if there are any codes stored in the ECM memory.

If there are, it might give a clue as to what is wrong.
