Noises problem
1999 GMC Sierra V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 130000 miles

A semi-sharp, parking lot sharp, only to the right produces a "pop" from under my engine. It definitely isn't coming from either wheel hub; closer to the center of the engine, at the bottom. Could this be a missing gear tooth on the rack and pinion? If so, can shops only replace this gear? Is it dangerous to drive until it can be fixed?
