1999 Ford Taurus transmission problem

Transmission problem
1999 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

my 1999 taurus speedometer stopped working and seems to have trouble shifting. I have a service engine light that i have not got the code for yet. will the on board diagnostic detect a problem with the speed sensor in the transmission ?
