Transmission problem

When I crank my car the engine races and then when I put it in Drive, the car jerks. As far as changing gears, there does not seem to be a problem. When I'm on the highway, I travel 82 miles a day to work and back, there does not seem to be any problems. Something is just not right. What does it sound like is wrong?
