1998 Plymouth Breeze Valve timing

Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Plymouth Breeze 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 165,00 miles

I purchased a plymouth breeze with a 2.4Ltwin-cam that will not run. It cranks over easily on the starter. (so easily that it is obvious there is no compression here) The timing cover was removed and I suspect the belt has been removed and replaced with out correct alignment of the cams. The thought of bent valve stems has crossed my mind. So my question is 1. Can the pistons hit valves when incorrectly timed. 2. what is the correct timing procedure for this motor? Thanks CZ

Hi:
I believe it is possible for the piston to hit the valve. If the valve cover is off, turn check for a valve that may be bent, not allowing the valve to close.
