Transmission problem

my car suddenly just wouldn't go over 20mph .I was driving and all of a sudden I felt like a thud like it got a jolt of gas and took off with out me doing anything. I was told about 2yrs. ago that I needed a catalytic converter. I wanted to know if this could be the problem or if it might be the transmission .I would appreciate any input on this.
