Transmission problem

Today as I was driving, my 'service engine' light came on. I was only a couple miles from home and I had to stop at a red light. As I was coming to a stop, it shifted abnormally (maybe a bit hard) but I didn't think anything of it. Then, as I accelerated from the light, I noticed that it wouldn't shift. However, it was in 2nd gear, not 1st. It was stuck in 2nd gear. When I got home, I put it in neutral and it shifted into neutral fine. I then put it into drive from neutral and it shifted hard into drive. It was definitely different from that smooth transition from neutral into drive that I'm used to. It wants to stay in 2nd gear whenever it's in 'drive mode'. So I'm really worried about it...could the 'service engine light' be warning me about the transmission? Do I have a serious problem with the transmission? I would really appreciate some help regarding this problem. Thanks in advance.
