Transmission problem

This morning, my wife went out to go to work, and the van started fine, but when she went to put it in gear, the shifter just goes up and down with little effort. It seems like something in the linkage or something, in the shifter itself, but nothing out of the ordinary was done. I tried rocking the van back and fourth, and also turned the steering wheel, and other simple things with no help. It will not move, it seems also like it is locked in park. Please help me....
