1997 Volkswagen Golf Oil

Engine Performance problem
1997 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 103000 miles

Had my oil changed and they put high mileage oil in it cause my car is so old. It burned a little oil and now my oil is a little low. My question is can i put regular 5w-30 oil in my car with the high mileage in it already. Will mixing the two cause problems?
