1997 Toyota Avalon 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 170000 miles

bought battery about 1 week ago then again yesterday it would not crank but would jump right off took off postive cable to see if altanator was bad and car did not die. mechanic says that it is the altanator. he charged the battery for a little bit and it cranked this morning What do you think change the altanator or get another opinion Do you know what else I may be able to check myself?
