Shakes or Wobbles problem

Hi, I have a 97' Subaru Out back, I took it to a mac last week he thinks it the Calconverter. He thinks it may be plug up and needed changed. My Check engine light has been on for years now. But now when I start to drive there no power and my car sputters going up hills, The check engine light now flashes. And then all at once there power. There also some smoke comng from under the engine right where the Engine Ex-Pipes like a Y splitting off to the first Calconverter. After driving it smell like burned rubber or Bad eggs. Help
