Engine Performance problem

Hi,
I had some work done on my car by a friend. my car was overheating so he hooked up the fans directly to the battery and switch, and grounded it. I drove it for over a week or more, it was fine.
Then the past week it started acting up, revving while I was driving, then the battery light starting coming on and finally stayed on while I was driving. I drove it home and parked it. and it wouldnt start again. My son tried to boost it and it started but all the metered hands started going crazy on it. and it died again. so I am wondering if its a possible short or an altenator problem.

I'd like to know how to find a short if that was the problem.

It could be a short or a bad ground. I would suggest that you remove the alt and have it bench tested at a local auto parts store.
