good day! i just bought a montero 1997 and i noticed that the check engine warning light goes on for a few seconds even when the engine is already running. i also noticed that volume of smoke emitting from the exhaust pipe is greater than normal. the smoke is white and is accompanied by water. i have changed the spark plugs and noticed too that the burning of fuel is good as indicated by the spark plug. the warning light does not stay on. what could be the problem?

You should start with getting a scan done to identify the fault code, also if the coolant is low have a head check done as well as the white smoke can be an indication of a head gasket problem.
