Engine Performance problem
1997 Lincoln Continental V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 158,00 miles

Car misses, poor acceleration. I checked all 8 ign wires with a timing light. 1 did not 'light up' on the upper coil pack and 2 did not on the other coil pack. I replaced the plugs about 20,000 mi ago but not wires. Are the coil packs the primary suspects?
Also, what is the best way to get RID of smoke smell in the interior?

first of all check for spark at each CYLINDER wiht a SPARK TESTER not a timing light.

get back to me with what you find.

to get rid of smoke smell best thing is fabreeze or a smoke/odor eliminating candle.

I pulled a plug wire and it had spark with a screwdriver. I replaced that plug with a new one. The old one looked OK except that it had not been firing. Again, timing light showed no spark. I rigged another plug wire I had laying around (it was too short so had to use some baling wire to connect to coil pack) and the timing light lit up! I'm thinking the next step is plug wires. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

spark at coil, none at end of plug wire? must be a bad wire! try swapping it with another, does that solve it?

I tried a couple of old ignition wires hooked together and the engine ran better and lit up the timing light. I replaced the wires with new and it runs almost great. It's get up and go came back! Thank you.
