Shakes or Wobbles problem
1997 Ford F150 V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 143000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a vibration in the rearend I think. When I opened the dif to change the fluid I noticed the spider gears were tore up in the limited slip carrier. I found a open rear for the truck with the same gears and installed it. I had the vibration before I changed rears. The clutches also spun in the carrier. The rear that I installed had a little movement in the pinnion flange, I tightened it up just enough to stop the movement. Would the spider gears and spun clutches in the carrier make that vibration? Also when the trans shifts(4r70w)either down to 1st or up to 5th there is a pretty good vibration and clunck. All other gears seem to shift perfectly. Thanks for your help, good luck.

So we are talking manual trans, not automatic? I take it the vibration is still there? Yes, a rear end problem like you describe will vibrate. You check the u-joints? WHen you say 5th do you mean converter lock up in OD? Could be a trans problem if it vibrates when it locks the converter. Any check engine light?

sorry, automatic, should have said 4th. U-joints good already checked them. No check engine light. Idles great so I did not suspect converter. I don't completely understand converter lock-up operation. educate me in simple terms.

After shifting into OD (4th) the converter will lock itself internally , it is a very slight rpm drop, and only at light /part throttle application, this drops the rpm's a little for better fuel mileage
