1997 Ford Explorer

Steering problem
1997 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 165000 miles

I just bought this truck, and have no clue about a 4-wheel drive. When you turn the steering wheel more than a quater turn, you hear lloud knocking sounds and it jerks a little. I was told it could be the u-joints. I dont know. what else could it be?
