Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Dodge Avenger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

i just bought a 1997 dodge avenger and i new it had a bad sencer when i got it,it did not start real well and did not idle good,it runs great once you get in the gas but as soon as i hit the brakes it tries to die on me.the other day i went to start it and it would not start and as soon as i let off of the switch the moter tries to turn over backwards and it smells like its flooding.i tried to start it later on and it started right up and ran for a few days and now it is doing the same thing but it has been doing it for days and will not start at all.one person told me map sencer but the guy at the parts place told me its the feul regulater.i just dont want to starting buying a bunch of sensers just to find one.what should i try first
