1997 Chrysler Sebring 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My mom has been having this issue with her Sebring for over a year.

The car will sometimes start, sometimes it won't. Hot or cold, no difference.

When it doesnt start, she waits a few minutes and tries again and like magic it works, sometimes. Other times she has to wait for upwards to 20 minutes.

Within the last few months when it doesnt start, she removes the gas cap and puts it back on, again, sometimes it starts right up, other times it takes a few times of putting the gas cap on and off.

Ideas?

first get it scanned for codes.. check engine light on?

secondly when it wont start, does it, or does it not crank?
