If oil is in the coolant then coolant is in the engine. You may not detect it but it's there. The oil cooler is a coil that runs through the radiator core. If it fails then oil and coolant will mix.
A blown head gasket will also mix coolant and oil, depending on where it fails. However, the engine will most likely run very rough, especially when it warms up. Do a compression test to determine if the head gasket indeed failed.
