Engine Cooling problem

We cannot find the thermosta on the car, could you give me the diogram to where it is that we may know for sure where it is.
It had been running hot, loosing water, and shut down. It acts like it will start, but the water is coming out, the car wasn't cooling, so we are trying to find the cheapest thing first to repair and go from there.
