1996 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 145000 miles

The code 341 says that the camshaft TDC sensor is the problem with the Golf? There is no camshaft sensor on the 1996 Golf that I can find? What would you suspect if you read this error message.
The timing belt is in good condition and has not
slipped a tooth? The car will not start. There is a
whinning noise coming from the throttle body?
Please let me know what you think?

If it is a 2.0 liter engine it is in the distributor
