1996 Toyota Avalon 6 cyl 160000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a toyota avalon stuck in a mall parking lot. My problem was that when I put in my key into the key cylinder it would not turn past acc, felt jammed. The steering was not locked at this point. I played with the steering and now its locked up and the key won't turn past locked. I got the ignition switch off back of the key shaft so now i can run the car. However the steering is still locked even when i turn on the car. How can i get the steering unlocked?

unfortunately if you cant get it unjammed by playing with the key in the ignition cylinder then you will have to go into the steering column and see what broke. you will need to press off the steering wheel to gain access. the lock is actuated manually through the ignition cylinder not electronically.
